Blueberry – Ochlockonee

Q: I am looking for a blueberry plant for fruit and for privacy screening. I’ve heard the ‘Ochlockonee’ rabbiteye blueberry is a good one. Do you have any better suggestions?

A: The blueberry you’ve chosen has a great reputation. It was developed by the University of Georgia’s Scott Nesmith. It blooms later than most other blueberries so frost damage is rare. It usually produces one-third more fruit than ‘Tifblue’.

You’ll need to plant it with other cultivars, like ‘Powderblue’ and ‘Brightwell’ for best pollination. Your family will enjoy blueberries for six weeks, beginning in July, each year. ‘Ochlockonee’ will grow to ten feet tall so it makes a good privacy plant. Plant four feet apart to get the best screening.
