Strawberry Pyramid – Building

Q: Are you familiar with the square pyramids that garden catalogs sell for strawberry planting? Can I make one myself? What kind of soil do I use?

A: A pyramid alloys you to put more plants into a given space. Strawberries are ideal for this. Rather than using wood, I made one using flexible fiberglass edging (www.easygardener.com). I first cut the edging into strips 150, 125, 100, 75 and 50 inches. I used rivets to join the ends of each strip to make five circles of 48, 40, 32, 24 and 16 inches in diameter. I filled the largest circle with topnotch planting soil, placed the next largest circle onto that soil to make another level upward and so forth. My kids and the birds enjoyed strawberries throughout the summer.
