Pileated woodpecker damage to maple tree trunk

Q: I’ve noticed something is going on with the trunk of my Japanese maple.

A: It looks like pileated woodpecker damage. They are big birds and when they find insects in wood, they really go after them.

If indeed there are termites present in the rotten wood, you do not need to control them. Termites don’t eat the living wood of a tree.
