Soldier Fly Grubs – In Compost

Q: I went to my compost tumbler to empty my veggie scraps and found an awful mess of worms – thousands of them! Are they good ones or bad worms?

A: These are soldier fly grubs. Though they look disgusting, they are harmless. They decompose compost for you, joining the billions of fungi and bacteria already at work.

The flies are not usually a nuisance. They rest during the day on landscape foliage and don’t approach people. Without the grubs we’d have a harder time disposing of organic detritus in the landscape.
