Don’t mess with the “ant”. It’s really a wingless ground wasp and if it stings you, you will wish for death.

Matt Unregistered says:
The “ant” is actually a female wasp of some kind. Common name for this bug is “cow killer” or “red velvet ant.” But again, it’s not an ant. The spider is commonly called a “writing spider”, not sure what the proper name is.

We would call the spider a writin’ spider, and if he wrote your name in his web, well you can guess the rest. It’s a good spider and does not bite.

The first is a red velvet ant and the second is a yellow orb weaver.
