Notes:
i planted three annabelle hydrangeas in the spring of 2020. they were doing extremely well but now the leaves have turned light green/yellowish and they developed brown spots on the leaves. they have a balance of sun and shade and i make sure not to over water them.

If they are soggy roots, is there something I can do I help prevent this?

the yellow leaves don’t look healthy. Could be soggy roots….dig down into root area to be sure.
