Notes:
Canker like growth at base of 30 ft cedar. Some defoliation earlier in the season has stopped and the crown is looking better. Very high sentimental value. Can the tree be saved?

I referred your pictures and your question to someone who had studied forestry. He thinks your tree is suffering from Annosus root rot (Heterobasidion annosum, Fomes annosus). In his opinion, the tree cannot be saved. He said this can spread to other trees, root to root. Recommended you to consult a Certified Arborist to deal with the issue. Best wishes!
