Notes:

I planted strawberry vines and this grew in its place. It has grown 3 feet in 2 months. Is it a weed or strawberry vine? I have no prior gardening experience and I just moved into this house over the winter. The garden area was already there but nothing was growing in it until I planted a few things.

I think you are correct – I am starting to see some yellow show through! I had no idea it was a sunflower. If I didn’t plant it, where did it come from? Is it possible that there were sunflowers in the garden last year and they sprung up again this year? (please forgive my plant ignorance)

Checked it out on USDA plants database: https://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=HEAN3 Sure looks like a sunflower flower bud.

Don’t think it’s paulownia, but Walter may have it with sunflower. More likely that than velvet leaf, which usually has a sharp-pointed heart-shaped leaf.
