Notes:
Grass in back yard is dead due to 2 large maple trees shading the area. Can the trees be pruned drastically to allow sun to reach grass?

Yes they can be pruned but perhaps an arborist, or tree professional can tell you the best answer to whether they can be pruned enough to allow grasses to grow.
