Notes:

This is growing in our backyard right against the house. We only bought our house a couple years ago and are still identifying the plants around the yard. This is the only one we have in our yard, I believe. It put out some small white four-petaled flowers that have a nice smell in mid-April or so.

You had mentioned the “nice smell”. I suggest you check out species & cultivars in the mock orange group (Philadephus genus). If this is mock orange, I don’t know which species or cultivar this is. The cultivar Philadelphus ‘Birchlands’ flowers images from the included link below has a similar look to your plant. I’m leaning toward mock orange than clematis. Best wishes! https://www.bigjims.co.nz/catalogue/plants/shrubs/philadelphus-birchlands-2-5l

I can’t make out clear enough details of flowers petals & buds to be certain. The flower appears to have long peduncle (stem), I’m wondering if this could be a type shrubby type Clematis? Check out this included link for some in the group. If this isn’t Clematis. Please resubmit and give us closeup of petals, flower buds, the flower’s center parts (stamen & stigma, etc…) and fruits if there are any. If this is of the genus, perhaps you could try the experts on the link for the plant exact ID. Thank you & best wishes! http://clematisinternational.com/page134.html
