Notes:
Black Rock Mountain, late afternoon and I was losing light. Didn’t get the best picture but I hope you can tell me what this is. Near the top of the mountain, located wooded to open area transition.

It would help if you went back and took additional pictures of the leaves and stems. The seed head resembles monarda.

I think you may be on to something there, I never noticed it. Turn my research to Cornaceae family. It was a group of plants fairly plentiful along the trail and low growing, maybe one of the dwarfs or bunchberries? Do you think the pink “petals” are Bracts or some other part of the “flower”?

Looks like some type of dogwood. Given the wet, less hot summer, lots of things have been blooming at odd times.
