Notes:
They are hard. Twist your ankle hard. I am leaning towards mushroom but it took much more effort to remove than any mushroom I have ever experienced. Once identified I need to know what will kill them. Thank you everyone.

Yes, it is a mushroom Probably decomposing thatch in your lawn or perhaps a dead tree root The stem gets woody, making it hard to pull up. Pulling and removing is all you can do
