Notes:

I have woods behind my house full of these trees (?) I want to clear them out and leave only the pine trees. They have a woody trunk. Some are as tall as 20 feet. The tips of the branches have old seed pods attached. The new leaves are slender with a sheen. Are these a tree or a weed? If a tree, what type?

They are Sourwood—one of the prettiest native trees of the N Ga Mountains. Source of the best red fall color, “lily of the valley” flowers in summer, and “Sourwood” Honey, best you can buy. Do NOT cut them down. At least leave the 20 foot ones.

The dead flowers from last year suggest Sourwood.
