Notes:

This tree looks fairly young, not fully grown. And smooth bark. We are searching for a tree to use for logs to grow shiitakes, and need a hardwood, so hopefully something that is an oak, sweet gum, etc. Not sure how to identify without buds, leaves, or flowers, yet.

I’m not an expert on trees and can’t tell what kind of tree from the photo. According to sources you could observe trees winter twigs for buds & leaf scar for clue when they are in dormant. Here are few examples of similar looking trees barks. The first two are for the American basswood. Best wishes! http://www.carolinanature.com/trees/tiam.html
