Notes:
This plant just appeared and I assumed it to be corn. It is now about 3 foot tall but instead of forming cobs it looks as though the tassel is forming the kernel. Each strand of the seed producing tassel is sort of flat or triangular instead of round. I planted some corn but not at this location. It is now forming the seed head but I don’t know how much longer before a frost. I looked up some of the commercial feed grains but didn’t see anything that looked like this. Is it teosinte?

You’re welcome! It would be fun to grow and make your own brooms. According to sources, sorghum is used in the birdseed product. If you were bird watcher, Just think of all the new ‘friends with wings’ you would have:). Best wishes!

I believe you are correct for the plant being broom corn. Thanks for your reply and a good eye for plant identification. I didn’t even consider broom corn. This is the first time to see it off the broom handle. I wondered if I had some kind of genetic anomaly that I needed to protect.
