Q: I covered my banana tree with straw and plastic bags for the winter. Recently, I removed the coverings and am not sure it survived. The top of the plant looks rotten, so should I cut the stalk back to 12 inches to see if it is rotted all the way down? Will this harm the plant if it is alive? Where does the new growth start?
A: If the top is rotted, the plant is dead. Bananas only grow from the tip, but you may get some pups around the bottom of the stem.
