Honoring Nolberto Ramirez

Each year WSB radio sponsors a donation drive, called the Care a Thon, to benefit the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Along with other WSB radio hosts, we devote 35 hours of programming to ask listeners to donate to support this great organization.

I was privileged to participate in the 2013 Care a Thon in July, alongside Ilyce Glink. During our time on-air, we heard the remarkable story of Nolberto Rodriguez Ramirez, a teenage boy from Rockmart, who had contracted bone cancer but was successfully battling it. Nolberto came into our hospital studio to be interviewed….he told his story with great courage, confidence and humility. Nolberto 3

Nolberto also brought his guitar, having learned to play it during the time he was in the hospital receiving transfusions and medicine. He performed a popular song on it while we listened.

Powerful it was…I could barely say my name when he finished.

Sadly, Nolberto lost his fight with cancer on September 11. He died at home with his loving family by his side and with the support of hospice.

If you would like to make a donation to the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center in honor of this wonderful young man, please do so.

Listen to Nolberto sing.
