Notes:

We live next to a heavily forested ‘ravine’ and are new to the house. The last couple of days when we sit out on our porch, we get these waves of what smells like mothballs through the air, especially as the breeze picks up. Is there a plant or tree that puts off this smell? We’ve lived in GA 30 years and have never experienced this!

I’ve had a bunch of plants I planted outside of my front door/windows and they’ve been there for years and this is the first time I’ve smelled what reminds me of mothballs. I have day lilies, gladiolas, pitcher plants, hostas, dianthus, daisies, adam’s needle and some others I don’t know the names. Regardless, the mothball smell is right at my front door and I can’t pinpoint where it’s coming from. I’ve never experienced this in the last 6 years I’ve lived there. Any ideas?

I live in eastern KY. Was just outside and smelled very strong smell of mothballs. I’ve never smelled this before outside anywhere. A few minutes later I saw a opposum in the yard. Could it have been that?

Hey. I’ve seen a plant smelling like that in Mexican jungle. They call it Chalagoga or something like that. It is with very big flat leaves with regular drop shape. They use it in traditional medicine. I were very surprised when i smelled it and it reminded me my grandma’s wardrobe!

The last two days when I walk out my front door, there’s a very strong mothballs smell. I have a medium sized plant right outside that was knocked over recently and thought maybe it was the soil? Any thoughts??

Did you determine source of mothball smell? I live in East TX & smelled it strongly tonight for several minutes. Animal or plant?
