Notes:
This plant is about to take over an old house I just purchased! I have found hundreds of these little guys poking through the ground on the north and east sides of my house. They emerge with shiny yellowish/olive leaves that are purplish red where the leaf meets the stem. The fronds are almost leafless, and are aggressive twiners. You can see the fronds in front of the crepe myrtle. Please ignore the ground ivy seen in the close ups.

Any idea how to control them? I’m assuming you must remove the root. I wouldn’t mind have them in a select areas, but there are hundreds over an area of 500-600 sqft! Thank you for identifying!

Wild yam (dioscorea sp) http://www.eattheweeds.com/yam-a-the-alata/ Make sure that you have the right one before sampling… If Greene Dean can’t tell the edible from the inedible for 12 years, I’m in no hurry to try eating that plant… But… They are pretty.
