Foul fruit found beneath large tree is not pistachio
Q: Can you tell me what this is, and if it is edible? We found then under a large tree. My wife thinks they are pistachios, but I am worried she may be seriously wrong because the pulp smells so bad.
A: Yes, the seed is edible but the fruit smells so bad I have never tried it. It’s not a pistachio. It’s the fruit of a ginkgo tree. The smell is variously descried as dirty gym socks, baby vomit or rancid butter. Because the seed can be deleterious to health in large quantities, I’d leave this one on the plate.
