My Mom is growing this and is asking people what type of tree or plant this is. No one can help her.

bklynshel1 is probably right. Link below indicated the smell of Perilla can be varied from :”from cinnamon to licorice”. According from other sources include apple, and mint aroma as well. Best wishes! http://www.eattheweeds.com/perilla/

She is thinking that it is indeed a beefsteak. The leaves underneath are starting to change to purple, she says it doesn’t smell like mint however. Perhaps we will see as the plant matures more.

Check out coleus ‘Wasabi'(Solenostemon scutellarioides ÔWasabiÕ) to see if it matches.

It doesn’t seem to have purple under the leaves or a mint smell, although it does have the other characteristics. I wonder if there are other similar plants to the beefsteak?

If it has a very pungent mint like aroma, it may be Perilla aka Beefsteak plant.
