Notes:
This plant was on side of a state highway somewhere in between Midland Texas and Cloudcroft New Mexico, in mid-July. I am looking for the name of the plant, and I am especially curious about the insects; they were pretty large insects and they were all over the flowers of this plant.

Wow, thank you very much!!!! I looked up the tarantula hawk wasp. There were probably 30 of them in front of me and all around. I’m lucky I didn’t get stung (and lucky that I’m not a tarantula)!

The plant looks like Broadleaf Milkweed (Asclepias latifolia). The insects could be a species tarantula hawk wasp of either Hemipepsis genus or Pepsis genus. According to sources they are almost identical, except for wing venation.
