This is on a tiny oak sprout in my garden. It is firm to the touch and about 1.5 inches in diameter.

Thank you! You are exactly right! We looked up oak gall and found that this one is caused by a wasp that lays it’s eggs on the oak. Then when the eggs hatch, this Wool Sowers Oak Gall is formed to protect the grubbs. Amazing!
