I wish I could see more of the plant to be certain. But with these leaves & flowers, they look like a type rhododendron. I don’t know its exact ID and could only speculating, maybe Rosebay rhododendron/Great Laurel (Rhododendron maximum)? Check it out and see if you have a match. On the side note, I ‘m not familiar with the local plants names of Old Fort, NC. But according to sources “mountain magnolia” is the common name for Magnolia fraseri.
