Notes:
Just bought an old house and no one I’ve asked can identify this tree or shrub. Previous owners didn’t know what it was either. It is fairly tall. It doesn’t seem to have any visible flowering at this time. Leaves are sort of normal tearshaped with opposite pattern on stem. Bark is semi rough with long striations, definitely not smooth. Please help! Neighbor wants to cut it down

I ran it through Virginia Tech’s tree ID ‘decision tree’ based on leaf characteristics, and 2 species of dogwood were the only candidates left standing.

Does the neighbor know if it flowers or not? The leaves look an awful lot like dogwood.
