Notes:
i’m looking for a ground cover to fill in bare spots in a shady backyard. i’ve seen this (weed?) growing well without anyone caring for it, and it’s low so it doesn’t require mowing 🙂 is it indeed a weed, and do you see any downside to using it to ‘fill in” bare spots?

Maybe one of the species of the Dichondra genus. This might be D. repens? Link below will help you decide to grow it as ground cover or not. You could also do more research on the pros and cons. In my humble experiences, usually when a plant grows well by itself, it just will be more works to keep it in check in the future. Best wishes! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dichondra

Only drawback is it’s a cool season plant and when it warms up your bare spots will return. this link may help you identify your plant. http://identifythatplant.com/three-easily-mixed-up-early-spring-plants/
