Notes:

This mystery growth has appeared in my lawn right next to my driveway. It is quite hard, I used a claw hammer to pull it out. From the top, it appears very white, and it is about 3 inches thick. It is sort of like one of those woody mushrooms you see on dead wood. It starts to grow on top of the soil, and just fills in around the grass. It ends up very like concrete.

    I’ve noticed large Box Elder trees in NE Tennessee have these type growths throughout the lawn areas beneath them as well.

    I do not know either, but while looking for clue about yours mystery growth. I found this link about cottonwood’s roots. Maybe that’s why it likes the water sprinkler.
