Notes:
A friend is buying a home with lots of overgrown shrubs, I said I’d help ID and clear some of the jungle. This is at the corner of the house. p.s. apologies if the pics aren’t right side up

Thank you for the feedback. If this is in the Magnolia genus, leaf buds would be fuzzy, this key can get you closer to the genus. Flowers can help you with species perhaps, but hybrids are much harder to tell in example, the cultivars in the Magnolia x soulangeana. You might find the included link below helpful. Best wishes!

Thanks for the guess. I don’t think it’s either of those magnolias, might be in the family though?
If I get the clean up job, it’ll be one of the ones we cut back and see how it comes back.

Another type of magnolia, the lily magnolia (Magnolia liliflora).

Without its flowers, it will be difficult. I’m guessing for now. Maybe a type of magnolia? If this is of the genus flowers are needed to narrow down further. For now check out leaves from a species in the group, the star magnolia (Magnolia stellata). When it blooms and you still don’t know, please resubmit with flowers photo. Again, I’m only speculating. Best wishes!
