It is hard like a potato. Nodes Growing on the larger one. I tried to save a hydroponic zucchini in August by putting in it soilless dirt and watering. The plant didn’t make it, but now I have this in the pot. ???

Regrettably I don’t know what is growing in your soilless mix. A wild guess here, some type of fungi? Check out the image of a type of puffball mushroom from the include link below . Perhaps the mushroom experts in the second link could help you more . Best wishes!
