Notes:
I’ve been told this is Japanese Knotweed, is this true? It is growing in a well tended garden that has been neglected for a year due to bereavement. It is growing amongst other plants which are mainly ivy (see photo)

This doesn’t looks like Japanese knotweed. Maybe a species in the Arum genus from Araceae family. I’m guessing only, this might be Arum maculatum. You know for certain when it blooms. Best wishes! http://wildflowerfinder.org.uk/Flowers/L/LordsAndLadies/LordsAndLadies.htm
