My back lot (1/2 acre) is overrun with this very fast growing plant, many are now over 6′ tall. It has a very shallow root system and is easily pulled out of the ground. What is it?

Jim, Thank you, that is it alright…Burnweed. www.friendsofthewildflowergarden.org/pages/plants/burnweed.html “The foliage has a pungent odor when crushed” It may have also solved another mystery, a recent washload of clothes came out of the dryer with a nasty smell. I had worn some in the yard while trying get rid of as many of these plants as I could.
