It looks more like a Dahlia of some kind. There are literally 100’s/1000’s of varieties so I can’t narrow it down any better than that for you. Perhaps you could send it to one of the Dahlia growers and they could identify it for you, http://www.dahlias.com/ . Outside of that, they produce tubers and in colder climates need to be brought in over the winter which is a good opportunity to divide them.

Hi Kim, thanks for your comment. There is a lot of Bee Balm in these parts and I am well acquainted with it, and though it perhaps may be in the same family, this is a much larger flower, and the foliage is very different. Also, I don’t think this is a perennial flower, as it is in a municipal garden in downtown Montreal, where they tend to plant different flowers every year. Thanks for your input though, I will keep on looking!
