Leaves are 3 lobed, stems have a few thorns, tall vertical flower stalks with red lateral blooms. Plant dies back during winter, sprouts again in spring. This is first year producing flowers.

I think Laura is right and the description fits except for the leaves. I have a Coral Bean and the leaves are closer to heart shaped then they are to lobed. However, the red color, thorns (small) and dying back during the winter match up well.

Looks like a species of Erythrina. I can’t see the leaves clearly, so I am guessing this might be Erythrina herbacea, several names common names include; Cherokee bean, cardinal spear and Coral bean.
