Notes:
Plant is about 5 feet tall and leaves are rough, almost sticky. I have seen no flowers.

“Leaves are rough, almost sticky” It seems like these are characteristics of the sandpaper tree/sugarberry Anacua tree (Ehretia anacua). Check it out and see if you have a match. According to sources sandpaper tree is a treasure, its fruits are edible. Click on images from the link below to enlarge. The second link is for more information.
