the fruit is eatable and it was given to me by my cousin from New York (staten island). they taste good when turn yellow. it is eatable in green also but not too sweet. Want to know the name of it. Just in case they may not be eatable. thank you

My cousin said her friend brought them from the store. Like it and grow it themselves. It is very easy to grow. No care need except Occasional watering and spray the bottom Of the pot with Sevin to stop ants getting to The fruit. Thanks

physalis species. Looks more like a ground cherry then a tomatillo. Did your cousin mention whether this was a wild plant, or a purchased one? The physalis family contains a large number of plants, many of which are grown commercially.

I think this is a nightshade plant. Some are edible(tomatoes, eggplants etc) and some are extremely poisonous (jimson weed). Yours I think is Cape gooseberry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physalis_peruviana Check this link regarding the plant as a food item http://www.gardensonline.com.au/GardenShed/PlantFinder/Show_2684.aspx I would certainly get an expert eyes on identification before chowing down on these.
