Notes:

My wife received this plant as gift a couple of weeks ago. No ID tag in plant? We live in the pacific northwest near Seattle. Can it be left outdoors over the winter. The blossoms look like little pumpkins and are very fragile

    Perennials.com listed a characteristic of physalis alkekengi as poisonious/ toxic. Perhaps that did refer to other plant parts.

    Actually… When I googled “physalis alkekengi edible” All the sites that came up claimed that the fruit (not the paper shell) was in fact edible… but sour.

    Looks like Chinese lantern, physalis alkekengi. Can grow in zones 3-9. Member of nightshade family; is poisonous. Can be invasive.
