Notes:
I was told it might be some type of orchid. It gives flowers at the tip of the leaves. The leaves have a smooth waxy feeling.

Indeed. Mine gets her seasons confused and is putting on buds as we speak–in time for Thanksgiving, will bloom again around Christmas, another time in the spring. She is very prolific and I have had her for 12 years. Holiday cactus is probably the best name, even though it is commonly sold as Christmas cactus.

The teeth on the edge of the segments show that it is Schlumbergera truncata, Crab Cactus / Thanksgiving or Holiday Cactus. http://www.cactus-art.biz/schede/SCHLUMBERGERA/Schlumbergera_truncata/Schlumbera_truncata/Sclumbergera%20truncata.htm
