Datura metel…many different varieties. I grew one like this in East Texas. Has a round spikey seed pod. Easy to grow from seeds. Very striking plant but poisonous.

This is a wonderful flowering plant for containers and in the garden as long as you do not have small children. All parts of the plant are poisonous. Makes several seed pods that are spikey round and 2 inches across. Pick when pod turns brown and place in a paper bag until they break open to reveal many 1/4 inch seeds. Start seeds indoors in March and transplant to garden when threat of frost is over. It will grow to 3 feet tall and is annual. It is called angle Trumpet and comes in several colors also single flowers like a lily. Its cousin also called angle trumpet does not produce seeds but cuttings root easily. Flowers much larger up to 12 inches long and fragrant at sunset. Many colors some doubles and also variegated foliage varieties. Plants grow to 3 to 4 feet tall in just one year. I overwinter my plants in basement here in Maine and do not cut back the plant until spring. Cut back in March, water and feed up stairs in a south facing window. I fertilize with Dynamite once outside in Mid May and also weekly with Miracle Grow for the most flowers. Two year old plants will grow to 6 feet tall and can produce up to 75 flower or more at one time. My whole front yard is filled with its wonderful fragrance from 5 to 10 PM every night. This is a real must for the container gardener.

This is angel’s trumpet – Datura – not sure of species or cultivar. Very similar to Brugmansia. Datura flowers are erect while Brugmansia are pendulous. Primarily the seeds and flowers contain substances that are poisonous and a hallucinogen.
