Male vs Female – Asparagus
Q: We have a nice bed but think I remember you saying that you should pull out the female plants? Are they the ones with the berries? I guess I should know this stuff, but there is just too much to know! I searched your website but didn’t find this particular question.
A: Females have the berries and produce a few less spears because they give energy to seed production rather than root growth. I guess you could cut off the berries as they are seen in order to keep its mind on making roots.
