I have added a new word in my vocabulary this summer and that is “slime mold”. We had the dog vomit slime mold and it was ugly and if you touched it we would get the brown powder. Thanks Walter.

Laura is correct! My mushroom expert Mary W. says “A great specimen of Stemonitis, a slime mold, not a mushroom. It goes through several stages. When it is in this stage it is often called the chocolate tube slime mold. If you wiggle it, there will be a visible puff of spores. Here’s a good discussion of it: http://www.messiah.edu/Oakes/fungi_on_wood/club%20and%20coral/species%20pages/Stemonitis.htm

It bears a striking resemblance to the hairstyle worn by the monks in medieval times.

I am only speculating here. If it is growing on wood (can’t tell exactly from the picture), then it could be a species of slime mould in the Stemonitis genus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stemonitis
