This plant has been kept in the shade and watered once a week. It is very rapidly dying leaf by leaf.

May be that the soil has poor drainage and that the water does not leave the soil before being renewed, resulting in rotting the roots? You might want to gently pry it out of the ground to see what it’s roots look like. Most plants dye from over-watering, which can occur with poor soil drainage. Richard
