This started growing last year. Some say it is buckthorn others say know. If it is what is harm or should we cut down. Please advise

    More on how to ID buckthorn. On the side note, beside European & glossy buckthorn, another species Rhamnus davurica (Dahurian buckthorn)is also found in IL.

    It looks suspiciously like bucthorn, but without the flowers to confirm and buckthorn can be confused with other natives, I can’t be for certain . According to sources, the inner bark has yellow or orange coloring. Check out these links below to help ID buckthorn. The first one also has a video link on YouTube with instruction of exposing the inner wood. Best wishes!
