Notes:
I live on Black Rock mountain in Rabun county Georgia. This plant is in several places in the yard. I’m not sure if it’s wild or was planted on purpose. The house was built in 1964. We just bought it. It’s mostly shade. This plant is getting partial sun. The stems are about 3 or four feet long on this particular plant. Once bloomed there is a pungent not necessarily unpleasant smell just not flowery.

Maybe something in the Leucothoe genus. Perhaps highland doghobble/dropping leucothoe ( Leucothoe fontanesiana)? Check it out and see if you have a match. if this isn’t that, make new post with photo of flowers. Best wishes! https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/all/leucothoe-fontanesiana/
