found in neighbors yard, northern IL, under a tree, last april where is has been cool and damp.

Hard to tell for sure from what I can see there but it could be a voodoo lily. The “pine cone” description makes me think more of an Alocasia but I don’t think most (or any) of those would be winter hardy in Rockford, IL…which is why I’m tending to think some variety of voodoo lily (Amorphophallus) maybe.
