Notes:
This plant was in a bucket in the greenhouse of a home I bought last spring. It had bamboo type stems. I moved outside to a shallow end of a pond, and it began to produce pretty red flowers. They only lasted a day or so but they kept coming all summer. In fall, I cut it back and returned it to the greenhouse. It hasn’t grown back yet, and may be dead. Would like to know the name so I can get another one!

I don’t picture this growing in Chicago, but it looks like Hibiscus coccineus. It does appear to be blooming in a well-protected space. Check out http://www.watergarden.org/Swamp-Hibiscus

I believe the plant is still alive. I broke off a woody remnant of a stalk and the roots are still green and supple.
