So I am in north Texas and this started growing in my backyard. I have no idea what it is but it has reddish thorns and appears to be either a tree or a shrub. Some bugs have eaten some leaves.. I hope that’s enough to make an id.

I can’t see the rest of the plant to be certain. But yours maybe a species of prickly ash (Zanthoxylum). I am guessing this might be southern prickly ash ( Z. clava-herculis). Link below will help you decide to chop or not. Best wishes! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zanthoxylum_clava-herculis
