My “guess” is based from the similarities between your plants and Rosa palustris. (eg. curved, long and wide base thorns, the shapes of leaves and sepals.) Your description:”seems kinda viney” seems to fit the arching habit of Rosa palustris. According to sources, it grows in normal gardens as well as poorly drained soil. But for me, a picture is worth a thousand ‘guesses’. So I still could be wrong :). Best wishes!

This might be Swamp Rose (Rosa palustris Marsh). http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/plant-of-the-week/rosa_palustris.shtml
