You are lucky this is growing in your front yard. These are called Jamun fruits in Hindi in India, with scientific name of Syzygium cumini. They have a particular taste, pleasant but sour and make your tongue purple. It is good for lowering sugar level in Diabetes patients. Please refer this wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syzygium_cumini

The previous comment wasn’t meant to confirm the ID. Metrosideros may be right – I’ll concede being no expert – but the Carolina laurel cherries in the Atlanta area have round fruit, not oblong.

It seems it has gotten pretty common to call this a ‘cherry laurel’ (see different common names on the link), but … it’s a cherry (prunus) with leaves resembling a laurel, not a laurel that has fruit resembling a cherry. The adjective should be in front.

Looks like Prunus caroliniana, Cherry Laurel. http://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=PRCA
