There are 1/2 dozen of these in my yard. They are new this year. They have yellow flowers that are small – about 1/2 inch across – that bloom individually on woody stems. When the petals all fall off, they leave interesting hairy pom-poms behind. They grow well in hot, dry areas.

laleela(Laura), this might be a species of avens (Geum). It is either Large-leaved Avens (Geum macrophyllum) or Yellow Avens (Geum aleppicum). They both have attractive seed-heads.
