Notes:
I have a part shade garden under a hemlock tree, and two of these showed up. They are spaced so nicely, that I almost wonder if this is a garden plant that I put in last fall and forgot about. However, I suspect that these are wild volunteers. Are they baby trees? Shrubs? I can’t see anything resembling these elsewhere on the property or in the neighborhood, so I am stumped. One distinctive feature is the wavy edge of the small leaves. The stems are rather dark. Any idea on these?

Without flowers to be certain, I could only guess that this might a type of privet (Ligustrum), maybe Chinese privet (ligustrum)(?). Check out and see if you have a match. Click on images from the included links to enlarge. If this isn’t that, make new post with flowers photo when it blooms. Best wishes. http://chalk.richmond.edu/biology/trees/htmls/ligustrum_sinense.htm
